Ebook About "Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True"Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” —Amy Ray, Indigo GirlsFrom the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.Book Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting Review :
I am not a songwriter, I didn't read this book to learn about songwriting I read it because I wanted to learn Mary's story. What an incredible book. For me, this was a book about reclaiming your authenticity no matter what. In each chapter, mary explores how a song came about how she hit the emotional truths to make the song have meaning. She does this by exploring various parts of her life in particular her addiction (that almost killed her) and her adoption. These are parts that really spoke to me. I believe there are two paths in life, one is to live your truth and the other is to not. Both are hard. Our truth calls us very strongly. It called Mary and despite being too much of everything (too old, too gay, too southern, too fat, too late) she just wanted to write and perform her own songs (in her late twenties she couldn't even play the guitar that well but she did it anyway). I deeply recognise that call and how it pulls you and the fear and resistance you have to go through to honour it. Because it is the only path.Music is how Mary returned to herself and it is my experience that everyone in recovery from an addiction is on that journey too. It is a book about authenticity no matter what. It is really the most important subject there is. Read this book to learn about the songwriting process but you will walk away with so much more. beautifully written. This book made me cry. I’m not sure I could write a song, even after reading it, but she has helped me and so many others with her music and I love the way she has shared her story here. I especially love the way she has “paid her rent” by working with veterans to help them tell their stories. I feel pride knowing she has been clean and sober for 31 years. I listened to her music as I was reading this and I recommend her music to anyone who is not familiar with it. 5 stars!
